"The thing with kids is, if they want to grab for the gold ring, you have to let them do it, and not say anything. If they fall off, they fall off, but it is bad to say anything to them.” ― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher In The Rye

BOOK CLUB: Let's Vote! August Book of the Month

July 23, 2015 Heather Ratliff

As summer ends, it starts to feel like time is gaining momentum until August is just a fleeting moment.  A month where you enjoy every last drop of sunshine as it bakes into your skin.  As you close your eyes to nap in the summer sun, you only open them to realize September is here and the days of recreation are over until next year.  But I digress.

Since August is the last month for guiltless diversion, I picked out 4 books from different generes to not only give you a complete selection, but also if you're not in love with this month's book club winner, then there are three other books that you might enjoy as the summer ends.  As always, feel free to make a suggestion if you're not interested in the selection.

1. Paperweight by Meg Haston

One of the heavier selections this month, Paperweight by Meg Halston is about a seventeen year old girl named Stevie with an eating disorder who is spending 60 days in a treatment center in New Mexico.  With only a short while until the anniversary of her brother's death, Stevie needs a way to heal her grief and stop blaming herself for her brother's death.

2. Secrets of a Charmed Life by Susan Meissner

Set in modern day, American scholar Kendra Van Zant interviews Isabel McFarland who is ready to reveal secrets from WWII that she has been keeping for decades, including who she really is.  The story then follows two sister in 1940's London. The girls are being fostered outside of the city, but one sister who is determined to succeed as a fashion designer is desperate to get back to London. The much younger sister just needs her older sister's company.

3. You're Never Weird on the Internet (almost): A Memoir by Felicia Day

Much celebrated "queen of the geeks", Felicia Day writes a memoir about her internet popularity, unusual upbringing, and surviving Hollywood.  This memior is quirky, funny, and inspiring.

4. The Good Girl by Mary Kubica

Inner-city art teacher Mia Dennet goes to a bar to meet her sometimes boyfriend, but when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with a stranger.  Now Mia is in a kidnapping gone wrong situation, and no one could predict the emotional entanglements that cause her family's world to shatter.

So there are your selections! If you have one you would like to add, or if you want to put a book into the running for next month, just let me know in the comments!  Voting will end on July 31st at midnight so get your votes in! I'll reveal the winner on August 1st!

Disclosure: I do receive compensation for the links provided, but it does not influence my reviews, or the books I choose to read.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.
